SAIA Energy Works produced this series of innovative shorts for the AfriSam-SAIA Award for Sustainable Architecture (2012). A very compact project with micro budgets, one shoot day per project, and a very open brief, we set a course far away from conventional architectural films. The award has a strong focus on the human elements in the design, and we chose to tell the stories of how we – both as observers, and as occupants of the buildings – experience, feel and see them. Shot mostly handheld, as the eye takes in the space, they are organic, interactive and living pieces which set out the capture the mood and ambiance of these extraordinary physical creations.

The Energy Works in Parktown North, Johannesburg (Daffonchio & Associate Architects): Some of The Energy Works’ green features include photovoltaic cells to generate electricity, solar panels to power under floor heating, rainwater collection tanks for bathroom and garden water needs and sustainable cork flooring and bamboo kitchen fittings.

This short film was produced for the creative agency Breinstorm, with The Kinetic contributing opening and closing animations.

Directed by Ian Henderson.
